Of an estimated $1,200 billion in global FDI inflows in 2006, less than one third was invested in emerging markets.  China and India accounted for the majority of this, but there has been growing interest in unearthing other growth opportunities in less understood regions, particularly Central and Eastern Europe and Africa.  Little more than $30 billion was invested in Africa, with South Africa alone attracting over 20% of that.

Many countries in Africa, for example, have seen economic growth on the back of rising commodity exports to supply the increasing demands of China and India and other advanced industrial economies.  Not only does focussing on natural resources obscure opportunities in other sectors, it also leaves these countries much more vulnerable to commodity price fluctuation, as well as political instability, corruption and skewed public investment.  In such regions, political, economic, financial and social factors are much more closely intertwined than in more developed economies; but not only are there fantastic opportunities for the well-informed investor, investment driven development in such regions will become self-sustaining as GDP rises and capital markets develop.

PBI publishes internationally acclaimed investment reports and stages investment forums for governments and inward investment agencies from emerging markets. Each report published acts an independent and comprehensive guide for potential investors and is combined with a one or two day investment forum that provides the subject government and the private sector the opportunity to present to, and network with, a large number of qualified UK and European-based industry leaders with a real interest in the target country or region.

PBI also publishes bespoke reports for the private sector, focusing on sustainable development issues.  The publication of such issue-based reports is accompanied by a high-profile launch event to promote the report to all relevant and interested parties.  Furthermore, PBI are also developing the capability to offer more detailed bespoke regional, sector and country-specific reports for individuals and organisations interested in little understood markets, particularly in Africa, and can organise private introductions with senior government officials and business leaders.

Putting these reports in the context of development not only emphasises the gains that can be realised by these emerging economies and those who invest in them, but also helps foster the wider social and political reform that is needed to engender long-term stability and security.  With contacts ranging all the way from international political and business leaders to local grass roots organisations, PBI has an exceptional depth of understanding of the investment and development issues, and is uniquely placed to drive this programme forward.
